Rhodium has high reflectivity, hardness, and corrosion resistance, often used as a catalyst in automotive exhaust purification to efficiently catalyze the reduction of nitrogen oxides. In the jewelry industry, it is used for plating to enhance luster and wear resistance, and in optical instrument manufacturing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div>Rhodium is far rarer and more dispersed than platinum and palladium, making it the rarest and most valuable member of the platinum group metals. Its industrial supply relies entirely on the comprehensive recovery of other metal ores; there are no independent deposits of rhodium itself.<\/div>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<p><strong>1. Primary platinum group metal ores:<\/strong><br\/> The ore is primarily composed of platinum group metal minerals (such as native platinum, arsenopyrite, and thioplatinite). Rhodium exists in isomorphous forms (substituting platinum atoms) or as fine, independent minerals (such as rhodium thioplatinite and rhodium platinum ore). It is almost entirely concentrated in the Bushveld Complex in South Africa. Rhodium content in platinum ore is extremely low. In the complex chemical processes of platinum refining (such as aqua regia dissolution, solvent extraction, and ion exchange), rhodium is separated and purified in the final stages due to its unique chemical properties. Obtaining rhodium from this source is costly and its supply is extremely rigid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2. Copper-nickel sulfide ore:<\/strong><br\/> Copper-nickel sulfide ores are an increasingly important source of rhodium supply, especially given the fluctuating supply of platinum ore from South Africa, which has enhanced their strategic importance. The ores are primarily nickel pyrite and chalcopyrite. Rhodium exists in these sulfides in a highly dispersed microscopic state. Rhodium is captured in precious metal concentrates (anode slime) from copper-nickel smelting and is extracted in conjunction with palladium and platinum refining processes. Its supply is closely linked to the global nickel and copper market conditions.
